Nappenheimer

I recently watched ‘Oppenheimer’ – a movie about one man *obsessed* with physics. It’s a lot like ‘The Beautiful Mind’ and ‘Pi’ – the main character is consumed: he daydreams about periodic table over morning coffee, he sees particles in his sleep. It’s dramatic and sexy.

That made me wonder: if they made a movie about me — someone obsessed with comedy — what would it look like? Would I be lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, whispering, “Punchlines… unstressed syllables… callbacks…”? Would I be scribbling jokes on the walls like a mad scientist?

Coz, honestly, that’s not me at all. I don’t daydream about stand-up. I don’t stare at a window thinking about the perfect punchline. There is never a dramatic moment where I drop everything and scream, “EUREKA!!!!” (Seinfeld or Jeselnick might). My obsession with comedy is rather boring. It has zero stakes or intensity. It’s Nap-penheimer, a snooze-fest.

Actually, it would be more accurate to say I’m obsessed with DOCUMENTING – not with comedy. I record everything around and inside me: weird stuff ppl say, illogical things ppl do, my own bad decisions and all the ridiculous conclusions I jump to. I *collect*, not dream of.

Life’s already funny. I just got to be awake enough to write it down.

What does your obsession look like?
